Among people that work in computer tech support there is a pejorative acronym that is used all too frequently, PEBKAC. It stands for problem exists between keyboard and chair. It refers to the reality that no matter how well an engineer may have thought they designed something, there is a strong chance that the user did something unexpected that has triggered this problem. No matter how many wordy warnings you might flash in front of users, some percentage of them will do the wrong thing so as a designer you need to be prepared for that. It seems that the engineers behind Tesla’s AutoPilot system may only be realizing that now, far too late.
