Here’s How Alibaba’s Foray In The Connected Cars Market Can Boost Its Revenues

Alibaba recently showcased its YunOS operating system which offers car technology that integrates the car with smart devices via the internet. This allows passengers to enjoy several convenient features such as booking a parking space or ordering and paying for coffee through the car’s infotainment system and Alipay. Alibaba first ventured into the connected car business in March last year when it partnered with China’s largest automaker SAIC and started a 1 billion yuan fund for this purpose. The company is now in talks with other car makers to build connected cars. According to the company, this will bethe first generation of cars that are integrally connected to the internet. The Internet Of Things (IoT) technology for cars is fairly new, however Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto are expected to become the leading car connectivity platforms in the world, with the exception of China where regulatory barriers exist. This gives Alibaba an opportunity to dominate in this space in China, which is expected to become a large market for connected cars in future.
