Robi the humanoid robot began selling in Singapore this month with the ability to speak Singlish, a term for English mixed with hints of Asian languages that have influenced the city-state. The robot designed in Japan to dance, sing and clean tables can say, for example, “Just call me Robi, lah,” when asked its name. You would think the talking tech tool would get a folk hero’s welcome in Singapore, where locals tire of hearing their brand of English derided as inferior to that of its former colonizer the United Kingdom. No other talking technology, such as smartphones or personal assistants for PCs, has bothered to replicate Singlish, one market research analyst says.
