Tesla blamed ‘rare circumstances’ for the failure of the autopilot system to detect a tractor trailer crossing the road ahead of a Model S driver. But, of course, it’s exactly the ‘rare’ circumstances involved in driving a vehicle — such as unclear lane markings, blinding glare, extremely heavy rains and so on — that create the biggest concerns about the self-driving future into which the world is heading.
