Can Cities Create Their Own Thunderstorms?

Can cities create their own thunderstorms? You bet they can. Scientists have studied this phenomena for decades dating back to the famous METROMEX field studies and even before. R.E. Horton published a study in 1921 noting a tendency for storms to form over cities more often than rural areas. Even NASA has explored the topic. Last night, Meteorology and Geography Professor Josh Durkee at Western Kentucky emailed me radar images below with the question, “UHI?” Senior Weather Channel Meteorologist Stu Ostro tweeted a similar image.  It is a lone convective storm that flared up over the city of Atlanta, Georgia.
