After playing the game for a week. Here’s what I thought about game. As biased gamer once.
I am writing this because I found lots of my friends seemed to share pretty much same bias about the game, so they did not buy or played the game.
Before telling about the game, I'd like to introduce myself a bit. As a 22 years old gamer, I've been in gaming session for at least 12 years I played lots of different games and genre.
Though, never played or never saw some kind of minecraft walkthrough since I thought the game was pretty much all about building and reviewers said Minecraft is not a game but more like Legos.
So, yeah, as someone who really enjoys competitive or story based game, the game seemed to be not there for me. To think about it, my favorite games are Dark souls, Diablo 2/3.
I was interested about the game though. Since the game gets really popular among gamers. However, I never thought this game would have such a huge community or fan-base and I waited for some-what better version of the game.
You know a lot of games get old and perish and newer, better comes by the time. BUT, there wasn't and the game is still very popular.
Yeah, so, I really didn't dig the graphic or the concept of game. But yeah, just because of how popular the game is, I thought."it's very popular so, why not to try? I wasn't into turn-based game but X-COM was enjoyable. Also Terraria was good fun, with all those bosses. Didn't really like building though…"
I know it's not really wise thing to buy a game just because it's popular ;>
So, yeah we are finally here. Let's talk about HOW I ACTUALLY FELT ABOUT GAME.
First of all, I was confused about editions and extra dumps with the game. I saw too many game-companies selling their unfinished product, then re-selling better, finished one after an year. [YES I AM TALKING ABOUT YOU, ROME II : Total shit] so I tried to act safe, got some helps from you guys. Thanks a lot!
Now into the game, graphic wasn't somewhat so bad. I played lots of games having worse or nothing [ASCII based games]. However I still felt the game could use better optimization. You know, opti-fine inside of actual game is what I am talking about.
Vanilla[not-modded, no opti-fine or anything] experience lasted 2 days long for me. Then I found opti-fine while looking for how to make glass in the game. [I strongly recommend opti-fine. It just optimize the game a lot.]
After using opti-fine, I played more and more. I did not get any more mods since I had bad experience w/ modding skyrim. And in fact, I didn't feel I need to mod anything because the game felt complete! Yes, I loved those Vanilla experience. :D!
I only played Singleplayer, Survival so, cannot tell much about multi-playing, and creative. However, on single- survival play, there are so much to run and so many new mechanics come to you. One of the best thing that I found is that. There are mechanics that can fulfill both, hardcore/casual players. I am not just talking about difficulty but about building auto-things. Redstone, piston…etc. They are perfect for hardcore who really want to maximize efficiency and "maximizing efficiency" thing does not need to be done in-order to just survive so casual people can play the game too without difficulty also casual players do not get any kind of disadvantage by not using redstones. I really think this is very smart game-design. The Ark, Rust… they can be played by casual players. Yet, they are hugely disadvantaged by not using some hard-core designs.
Though, I must say, the game really is not for people are not gamer at all. Since the game needs wiki-ing for better experience. You gotta know basic recipes. Finding craft-recipe could be a lot fun. However for me, It was quiet hard to find out those. Especially when the sun is going down and the moon was rising for monsters to eat me alive. Damn could not find torch recipe myself. 😦
Still, though, if you do not mind wiki-ing, game offers more than a few. I've been told a lot, the game is almost like lego and there is not objectives or good old story ending. However, I feel there is actual objective.
For first day, making or building a shelter finding a way to make torch was the deal. Second day, you gotta eat something for sure so hunting. Third day, you do not want to be a dwarf living under or in rocks[actually eh, you might want to. then go on though]. You want home! yeah? Build it. Forth day, time to upgrade, and explore…. and goes on and on and on. I mean, they are not exactly told to be an objective through some-kind of quest. However they are needed and they surely are objective for YOU. NOT NPC, or for some old village. It is your very own objective and very own quest. Ain't it wonderful? At least I think it's wonderful.
Story wise. You can have your very own story and that's it. Simple. Easy. But good.
Also, the game offers what you expect to the game to have. For example. It's mining, building, survival game. and there are cows, pigs, goats, chickens. May be you might be able to breed those animals for suplying food…? Hmm but it's mining game. I might need mods— oh wait I can breed them!
That example up there, is amazing. When I was into skyrim modding scene. I really did not like un-modded skyrim. Why? because Skyrim did not have detailed side-actions. Yeah NPCs can sing, drink… However what about dovahkin? I am legendary man and I can't even sing or dance? Where are all role-playing? The answer is, MOD THE GAME.
I mean, I am not some-one hates Skyrim. It's good game by itself. However for playing the game in my very own way, the game need to be modded. However, Minecraft is very opposite of that. You may mod your game but you still can play the game in your very own way. As far as I know, Minecraft's mods are more like adding magics or more of convenience to the game. Not like adding an animation that actually was needed to be in-game already.
Overall, It is amazing Game. I've been playing only minecraft for a week. Even if I had Overwatch in my hand. I was really biased about this game. "More like LEGOs" or "NO-objective casual game" or "It's for kids!" or "There is only building but no survival gimmicks" Yeah, those bias seems to be common and I actually was a gamer who had those in my mind too. It's not LEGO or Kids game or Casual-only. If you are a gamer who is or was like me, please do try the game. It's cheaper than other AAA games. Also if you were into Skyrim role-playing aspect. I strongly recommend the game.
TL;DR
- 22 years gamer who loves [Demon,Dark] Souls series and Diablo tried minecraft
- Expected the game to be just LEGOs but more than that. IT IS A GOOD SURVIVAL GAME
- You expect something too much for a such cheap old game. However there is the something! BOOM!
- If you are biased like I was, You might love the game.
Hell this got longer than I expected. Thanks for reading. Love you all guys :D!
