This morning we woke up to Tropical Storm Bonnie approaching the South Carolina coastline. My colleague Dennis Mersereau wrote in Forbes on the rainfall and rip current threats from this relatively weak system. In 2015, South Carolina faced a weather event that ultimately produced almost 2 feet of rainfall in some locations and caused catastrophic flooding. The meteorology of what happened is masterfully described by former NASA colleague Dr. Jeff Halverson in Capital Weather Gang. What bothered me is that meteorologists saw the 2015 flood threat several days in advance. However, I felt like it was a struggle to get people to focus on that threat. Many people were focused on a tropical system, Joaquin, that was not even going to affect the United States.
