Overwatch hit PS4, Xbox One and PC yesterday, making it one of the biggest releases of the spring and a hugely important moment for games in general. It is not the first multiplayer-only AAA shooter we’ve seen in recent years, but it’s among the most prominent, and it’s the first new IP Blizzard has launched since StarCraft. It could stand to be a real tipping point in the industry, leaving some cheering, others shaking their heads, and most, like always, not caring at all. Multiplayer only shooters are likely here to stay, and it begging the question: are they worth the same $60 as sprawling single player releases?
