Taiwan’s First Female President Tsai Ing-wen Starts Out On A Good Note

It’s easy for new-to-office politicians around the world to highlight the problems they inherit from predecessors.  In the U.S., for instance, President Obama doesn’t often miss the opportunity to criticize Republican opponents for the bad economy he inherited from President Bush back in 2009.   In her inaugural address today, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen laid out the economic problems she is inheriting from outgoing President Ma Ying-jeou, with a special focus on youth employment.  Identifying problems isn’t the same as having a ready solution for them,  and so perhaps Tsai’s best success today was to exude a frankness and confidence to take them on.
