Five Common Misconceptions About Hurricanes

During a recent episode of The Weather Channel’s Weather Geeks we discussed hurricane “amnesia.” A major hurricane has not made landfall in the United States since Hurricane Wilma in 2005. To put this in perspective, hurricane expert and Weather Geeks producer Dr. Matt Sitkowski points out that the last time a major hurricane made landfall in the United States, there was no Twitter or iPhones. With a decade of coastal resident turnover, hurricane amnesia is a big concern as we ramp up to the 2016 hurricane season. During a social media discussion as Weather Geeks aired, a person asked me why Hurricane Sandy was not considered a major hurricane. In that moment I realized that there are misconceptions about hurricanes that are worth clarifying.
