Early rumors suggested that the Battlefield franchise would be returning to World War 2 — shedding the trappings of modern warfare and reminding us why this game made such an impact in the first place. It would have been a nice idea, but WW2 as a setting has been done, just not recently. WWI, however? Ask me last year and I’d have said it was absurd. I’d have said it was absurd as setting Far Cry in the Stone Age. The game world doesn’t surprise as often as we might like, but I like what I’m seeing when these AAA properties start throwing out the rule books.
