It all paints a picture of a company that has been far from dominant in the home console space for a very long time, raising the stakes with each successive generation. Today, we’ve got a company that’s largely viewed as an underdog, with a lot of goodwill from the gaming community, some of the most valuable IPs in the space, and two massive competitors in the form of Sony and Microsoft. That’s the situation we’re in right now: there are a lot of people that want the NX to succeed, but perhaps even more who are apprehensive after the Wii U. And frankly, I’m not sure how many times the company can lose that core audience and then take another crack at it. The NX has to reestablish Nintendo as a premier hardware manufacturer, earn back the trust of the core gaming community and, ideally, push things forward in a way that is just interesting enough to draw in both new customers and the generalized curious.
