Inside Forbes: RIP Digital Article Page (We Won’t Miss You)

I’ve had a long love/hate relationship with the digital article page, a main source of revenue for any news organization. It delivers news efficiently, but is little more than a pixelized reincarnation of its century-old newspaper predecessor. Digital know-it-alls have tried to bury it with every disruptive twist and turn. Twitter would kill it. So would apps. Facebook, too. It lives on. I believe the smartphone will eventually be its undoing. Mobile consumers like short information bursts and video, not 1,000-word stories. That’s why we’re building a card-based phone experience — 450 characters of info with a photo, chart, video and ad that can be configurable for mobile swiping behavior. Alas, as the article page hangs on for dear life in the face of the inevitable, it’s actually mutating!
