The NX And The PS4: Does A Console Even Need A Gimmick In 2016?

The NX is a hot source of rumors these days, in part because the video game world always loves leaks and lies, and in part because the thing really is a genuine question mark for many people. Nintendo is hurting from its trials with the Wii U, and it’s clear that it’s going to need to take a different tack when it comes to this next console. But which tack will it be? Will it skew traditional, mimicking the success of Sony’s PS4, or will it take another trip out to left field? If the latter, what on Earth will that look like? Nintendo is unafraid of being called silly, and many of its consoles have had what we might call gimmicks: the Wii had the motion controls, the Wii U had the second screen, the DS has its two screens and stylus, the 3DS has its glasses-free 3D, etc. Nintendo has been very clear about one thing for a long time now: this is a company that innovates in the hardware space, constantly looking for new ways to interact with games and game consoles. Here’s the late Satoru Iwata, from about a year ago:
