The path to building a smart home is usually done in steps. You purchase separate components as deals come around or new tech catches your eye – a Kwikset deadbolt here, a Ring doorbell there, an Echo from Amazon, maybe a SimpliSafe system for security. The problem is, once you get a few smart things around your house, your phone screen starts to resemble your coffee table with its pile of remotes; everything has an app to control it and none of them talk to each other.
