Windows 10 and the Universal Windows Platform are open and they always will be, according to Xbox Head Phil Spencer. A few weeks ago, Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney came out swinging against Microsoft and the Universal Windows Platform in an op ed in The Guardian, using the word “monopoly” enough times to make any company that’s had its brushes with antitrust law nervous, accusing them of “curtailing users’ freedom to install full-featured PC software, and subverting the rights of developers and publishers to maintain a direct relationship with their customers.” Spencer talked to Gamespot at the Microsoft Build Conference recently, and he made clear to distinguish between Windows as a platform and Microsoft’s store on it. You need to be approved to sell through their store, he said, but you don’t have to sell through their store.
