Compliance Risk Study Shows Compliance Function Needs New Initiatives to Protect Its Hard-Won Gains

Financial institutions’ compliance functions have come a long way, but they still have some distance to travel before they reach the right strategic position within their organizations.  In Accenture’s 2016 Compliance Risk Study – based on a survey of more than 150 leading compliance officers at banking, capital markets and insurance institutions in the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific – we found that compliance functions are using their hard-won seat at the management table to provide more strategic and valued advice to the business.  Compliance faces the risk, however, of becoming overwhelmed by the weight of new regulations, increased business expectations and the management of ever-more-complex day-to-day operations in a rapidly changing ecosystem and regressing back into a more siloed role.
