Does Netflix Have A Competitive Advantage In Asia?

Recently, Sky announced a partnership with Iflix, by investing $45 million in the latter. Q Southeast Asian streaming service, Iflix is Netflix‘s competitor in Asia. Operating in Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines with over one million members, Iflix could well prove to be a strong competitor for Netflix in the region, strengthened as it is by its partnership with Sky. While Netflix only entered these markets in January 2016, iFlix was launched earlier, in 2015. In addition, ahead of Netflix’s entry in Asia, telecom giant Singtel, in partnership with Sony pictures and Warner Brothers, launched a video streaming service called HOOQ in 2015 in the region. Both of these companies have the advantage of launching before Netflix. They also boast of a stronger regional library of content and both offer cheaper subscriptions than Netflix. While Netflix appears to be targeting the affluent population in the region, we believe focus on increasing local content along with managing subscription costs better will be important for Netflix as it aims to capture a greater market share in the region.
