Don’t you wish you could be like Mike? Mike being Mike Ehrmantraut, beat cop turned criminal feature, who’s been one of the bright spots on both Breaking Bad and now Better Call Saul?
Well, the closest thing to that might be picking the brain of writer Gordon Smith. Smith has been on unofficial “Mike Duty” in the BCS writers room, having written the script for Five-O, last year’s Emmy-nominated script about Mike’s backstory, and now Episode 204, “Gloves Off’ this season’s biggest “Mike Episode” to date. Smith is one of the fruits of the show’s promote from within policy, having started out as a writer’s assistant on Breaking Bad before landing a writer’s job on Better Call Saul.
I caught up with Smith to discuss Pabst Blue Ribbon, Jimmy and Chuck’s relationship, mining the history of Breaking Bad,  and what it’s like to live inside Mike’s head for a while.
