Google points the way to making better trade-offs between HDD capacity and IOPS for HDDs that are designed for data center applications. As more of the world’s data ends up on HDDs in data centers it is likely that some of these suggestions will be developed by the HDD companies and their data center customers, providing cost effective scale-able storage.
