Can Goat Poop Overpower Fossil Fuels?

It turns out that the same fungi that live in the guts of goats create the very enzymes we need to degrade the crude plant material necessary to produce the billions of barrels of biofuels we need to replace gasoline and diesel as our fuel for cars and trucks. In the gut of these animals, the fungi produce these enzymes to help herbivores digest stubborn plant material like woody stems and straw, materials called lignocellulose. In return, the fungi get a nice warm, wet home in a host that gives them all the food they could ever want. An international team of researchers harvested these fungi from goat poop using special facilities at PNNL in order to demonstrate the fungi?s amazing properties.
