Motorola Solutions’ EPS Jumps Despite Revenue Decline; Airwave To Help Recurring Revenues

Motorola Solutions registered a significant improvement in its Q4 EPS even though its overall revenues were down for the quarter. The company’s cost control initiatives bolstered its margins, and a significant decline in share count due to the buyback program pushed EPS higher. While Motorola’s bottom line appears in good shape, the fall in revenues is a concern for the company. This is likely to continue in the near term owing to macroeconomic weakness, currency headwinds, the network transition in Norway and iDEN declines.  Nevertheless, from a long term perspective, Motorola is fairly well-positioned, having sufficient cash from its operations and Silver Lake to invest in technological innovation. Also, with the Airwave acquisition complete, the company could see a significant rise in its recurring revenues, which should help offset the revenue decline going forward.
