On February 21st, Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge at the “Unpacked” event taking place at Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona before Mobile World Congress 2016. Last month, I published an article with a roundup of 10 leaked Galaxy S7 features in early January and Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly provided an update with 5 more leaks. However, there have been several more leaks since then. The updates include details about the prices, the color options and the Edge battery size.
1.) Better Price Than The iPhone
Rumor has it that Samsung is going to sell its latest flagships at prices that are competitive against the newer iPhones. The 32GB Galaxy S7 and 32GB Galaxy S7 edge devices are expected to cost €699 and €799, respectively. This is a €50 drop from the introductory price of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge last year. As a comparison, the introductory price of the 16GB iPhone 6S and 16GB iPhone 6S Plus was priced at €739 and €849 in Europe, respectively.
By selling at lower prices in Europe, it seems very likely that phone carriers in the U.S. will sell the new Samsung devices at a lower cost too. My guess is that U.S. carriers will sell the Galaxy S7 at a price that is between $50-$100 lower than the introductory Galaxy S6 price. In U.S. dollars, the introductory prices of the Galaxy S7 predecessors depended on the carrier. According to IB Times, the introductory prices of the Galaxy S6 devices were as follows:
– T-Mobile sold the 32GB Galaxy S6 for $679.92, the 64GB Galaxy S6 for $759.99, the 128GB Galaxy S6 for $859.99, the 32GB Galaxy S6 edge for $779.76, the 64GB Galaxy S6 edge for $859.83 and the 128GB Galaxy S6 edge for $959.83.
– AT&T sold the 32GB Galaxy S6 for $684.99, the 64GB Galaxy S6 for $784.99, the 128GB Galaxy S6 for $884.99, the 32GB Galaxy S6 edge for $814.99, the 64GB Galaxy S6 edge for $914.99 and the 128GB Galaxy S6 edge for $1,014.99.
– Sprint sold the 32GB Galaxy S6 for $684, the 64GB Galaxy S6 for $786, the 128GB Galaxy S6 for $864, the 32GB Galaxy S6 edge for $784.99 and the 64GB Galaxy S6 edge for $884.99 (128GB Galaxy S6 edge was not offered).
– Verizon sold the 32GB Galaxy S6 for $599, the 64GB Galaxy S6 for $699, the 128GB Galaxy S6 for $799, the 32GB Galaxy S6 edge for $699, the 64GB Galaxy S6 edge for $799 and the 128GB Galaxy S6 edge for $899.
If Apple keeps its pricing structure consistent for the iPhone 7 as it did with previous devices, then it will definitely be more expensive than the Galaxy S7. As an incentive to buy a Galaxy S7, Samsung is reportedly going to throw in a free Gear VR headset to consumers that pre-order the upcoming flagship smartphone before it launches on March 11th. Tweakers.net has posted a leaked screenshot of the prices associated with each of the Galaxy S7 devices:
