What Does The Term Blizzard Actually Mean?

On the morning of January 20th, 2016, the National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore-Washington issued a Blizzard Watch. This is in anticipation of what seems to be a historic snowstorm shaping up for parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast United States.  All of the major weather forecast models are in consensus for a significant snow event. The details of the watch can be found at this link. This quick post is to make sure that the public understands what a “Blizzard” means. It is one of the most misused or casually used meteorological terms. Media in the South and other regions that rarely see snow will often use the term for any significant or hampering winter weather event. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen a 2 inch snow storm described as the “The Great Blizzard of the South” or other hyperbolic terms. The term is also used generically by many to describe a heavy snow event. What does the term “Blizzard” actually mean?
