Raising Sand (2007) was a remarkable album and its availability in high definition enabled me to renew my love for this collection of duets featuring former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant and one of music’s most Grammy-winning artists, Alison Krauss. The album snagged five Grammy awards including the “Album of the Year.” Yet while Raising Sand features many remarkable duets between Krauss and Plant, perhaps my favorite song on the album isn’t really a duet. It’s more of a Krauss song, actually, and it’s called “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us.” Recent conversations with several friends who love the song (and the album) have made clear to me that many don’t actually know to whom the title refers.
