Extrasolar Planet-Hunting Hits Home

On a snowy January morning some twenty years ago, I found myself knocking at the office of Michel Mayor, then a little-known Swiss astronomer. Mayor, along with Geneva Observatory colleague Didier Queloz, had recently confirmed that the sunlike star 51 Pegasi harbored a planet about half the size of Jupiter.
