Early this morning — in a post-dream moment of clarity — I got an insight into the meaning of Christmas that had eluded me my entire life: it’s one of the world’s largest birthday parties, and everyone is expected to bring gifts. But the gifts, of course, are not for the baby. They are for the people who make our lives possible, and to whom, were it not for the holiday, we might forget to give something back.
