In the US, there are more than 40 million low to mid income households spending $70 billion every year on utilities alone. That’s about 14 percent of their total income, nearly double the average household which spends around six percent and almost 75 percent more than high-income households that spend only three percent of their income on energy annually. Why? Lower income households typically reside in less energy-efficient homes or apartments which add to the burden of increasing utility bills.
