The COP21 climate meeting in Paris has ended with mixed feelings. But one thing that was certain is that limiting the rise in global mean temperatures to 2°C will require nuclear energy to rise from about 400 GW to 1,000 GW by 2050, producing about 9 trillion kWhs/year, at a construction cost of about $8 trillion. This also assumes wind and solar reach about 2,000 GW each, producing about 10 trillion kWhs/year combined, over the same time period, at a construction cost of about $20 trillion. The world?s top four climate scientists, led by Dr. James Hansen, were even stronger about nuclear, declaring that the anti-nuclear position of environmental leaders is causing unnecessary and severe harm to the environment and to our planet?s future.
