No, Not A Conspiracy, Just Kelvin-Helmoltz Wave Clouds

When I saw the amazing photographs captured on December 10th, 2015 in Utah, I knew immediately what they were:  Kelvin-Helmotz Wave Clouds. They are always breathtaking, and these are probably some of the most “textbook” versions that I have seen. I reached out to the photographer, Brad Peterson. I found this part of his email response to be fascinating, startling, and utterly disappointing at the same time:

I’ve had over 1000 comments, most have been positive, some however have tried to disprove that these are real….allege that they are man made from airplanes…(some really radical conspiracy nonsense)

When I saw this,  I had to write about the science of Kelvin Helmholtz wave clouds.
