You may have heard of the term “intrapreneur” which refers to entrepreneurs that exist inside of organizations. Organizations around the world such as Linkedin, Dreamworks, Cisco, AT&T, and many others are encouraging employees in their organizations to think more like entrepreneurs and less like the stereotypical employee. Typically entrepreneurs are scrappy, think on their feet, are able to learn new things and adapt quickly, are eager to make a dent in the world, are self-driven and motivated, embrace failure, and work on things that they care about. It’s not difficult to imagine why this type of a mental approach and skill set is so attractive to employers which is why this concept of the internal entrepreneur is becoming so popular. Of course there is still a place for employee who just want to show up from 9-5 and complete their daily tasks, in fact many people are quite comfortable with that. However, there is a unique opportunity available for people who can bring that entrepreneur mindset and skill set to organizations around the world. This is not only valuable to employers but also for individuals as well. We live in a world where we can no longer rely on organizations or educational institutions to give us the skills and information we need to succeed. Taking responsibility for one’s own career path and future is necessary, and thinking and acting like an entrepreneur will lend itself to be quite useful for success inside and outside of an organization.
