From Hideo Kojima To The Witcher 3, The Game Awards Have Become Relevant

In the lead-up to last night’s The Game Awards, the pressure was on to build on last year’s momentum. In 2014, The Game Awards were Geoff Keighley’s new attempt to create an awards show that combined the Oscars and E3, after years of The Video Game Awards (the VGAs) being something of an eye-rolling let-down for most gamers, full of disconnected celebrities and “attitude,” as the show was aired on Spike TV. It wasn’t the Oscars, or even the Emmys, and was probably still a few rungs below even the VMAs. Certainly not the kind of awards show the industry needed. But now? The Game Awards just might be that program.
