Unlike many of its neighbors, Jordan lacks the bounty of natural oil reserves. Instead, it’s home to treasures old and new: historical biblical sites attracting tourists from around the world, and a community of startups, encouraged by government policies making it easier for locals and foreigners to set up shop. Wadi Rum, where one can retrace the steps of Lawrence of Arabia against a dramatic landscape, and the ancient city of Petra, offer ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences for well-travelled and well-heeled visitors. Despite Jordan’s position as a safe haven in a region with as much stability as a tinderbox, tourism has suffered by association and proximity. The number of overnight visitors to Jordan halved in the first two months of this year, alone.
