A friend of mine often says that you are pretty unlikely to hear any scientist exclaim ‘Eureka!’ when working on their research. Phrases that you will hear often however include ‘that wasn’t supposed to happen…’, ‘why won’t it do what that paper tells me it should do?!’ and ‘I’m sure a little contaminant won’t matter… after all, it’s only coffee…’ in amongst a plethora of profanities. Often though, the results of these accidental and surprising experiments can lead to some of the most incredible scientific breakthroughs that we now take for granted, from Penicillin to Kevlar, and Stainless Steel to Dynamite.
