The public health potential of patient-generated big data first struck me when I heard the Mayor of Oklahoma City, Mick Cornett, lament at the 2013 TEDMED conference that his city had the unfortunate honor of being ranked the most obese in the United States. He explained how this sudden awareness had sparked a city-wide effort to help its citizens collectively lose one million pounds. Local authorities even decided to reorganize city infrastructure and public transport systems in order to incentivize people to walk more rather than drive their cars in the city center.
