When it comes to high-stakes industries, practicing one’s craft is of utmost importance. Yet, health care (and pediatric surgery in particular) is an industry that does not usually have the luxury of practice. When a baby is born, there are no trial runs on the heart or brain that repair a valve leak or ventilate a tube on a child two hours old. In the past, surgical teams have been forced where possible to use more rudimentary trainers, including dissecting seeds from red peppers as training for certain neurosurgeries. But now, thanks to special effects artists, a “seedectomy” will no longer be the gold standard for preparation.
