The most important thing you need in a Halo campaign is something very large. Ideally, this thing should be shiny, and older than history itself. It should be infused with a mystical power that straddles the line between science and magic, it should trigger an orchestral sound cue when you get sufficiently close to it. It should dwarf and challenge the player at the same time, daring the main character to approximate it’s grandeur. It should have a name that is at once recognizable and mystical: the Library, the Ark, etc. The character should take it all in stride. Halo 5: Guardians’ titular Guardians meet all these criteria, and they are no less awesome for their predictability. They are massive, seemingly invincible Promethean warriors that hang in there like leviathans: giant, silent and silver, they remind you that you’re playing a Halo game, and you can sit back and enjoy that fact.
