That YouTube Red is getting some pretty serious push-back from its partners should not surprise at least one party … YouTube. This is a tension that is almost as old as the company itself. It has its roots in the search for meaningful monetization, the independence of its key constituency, its concern with “premium” content vs. user-generated content and, more recently, the many opportunities that huge YouTube personalities are starting to realize elsewhere.
