It turns out that even if your eyes are on the road and your hands are on the wheel, voice command systems in cars are just as mentally distracting as picking up your phone and updating your status on Facebook, according to a AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study. This finding should surprise no one despite auto manufacturers’ best and deep-pocketed efforts to develop intuitive and robust systems that give drivers the media and navigation services they want while driving, but without reaching for their handsets. But the solution isn’t to ban talking to our cars. Rather, we should just make our cars safer to talk to.
