The overall image of Chinese business is something like that of a flotilla of semi-independent, carnival speedboats: they look good, are flashy, fast-moving, and change directions quickly, and they are cheaper to build and operate – but the speedboats leak a bit, keep breaking down, and are piloted by inexperienced skippers who occasionally collide with each other – and so a great deal of time and energy must be dedicated to applying patch work fixes just to keep things running relatively smoothly.
