Measured in any of the terms that matter, the Shenume 3 Kickstarter was a success. It quickly shot past its initial $2 million goal to become the most funded game in Kickstarter history, raking in $6.3 million by the time the crowdfunding campaign was over. As with other large Kickstarter projects, however, people were a bit skeptical: not only did Suzuki’s clear support from Sony and presence on an E3 stage seem to clash with the bootstrappy Kickstarter mentality, some pointed out that $2 million wasn’t anywhere close to what you would need to build a modern open world game, and the developers were a bit cagey about outside funding. In a new interview with Eurogamer, Suzuki opened up a little bit about the development process, from both a creative and financial point of view.
