2016 Chevrolet Volt: Has GM Finally Created a Worthy Toyota Prius Rival?

The Chevrolet Volt went on sale 5 years ago and has yet to hit 100,000 total U.S. sales. To put that in perspective, the Toyota Prius has averaged approximately 150,000 sales a year for the past decade. The reason is pretty simple — the Prius (well, the second-gerneation Prius, introduced in 2004) arrived at a time when fuel prices were climbing, society decided trucks and SUVs weren’t cool anymore, and Leonardo DiCaprio took one to the Oscars. Much of that Toyota didn’t have control over, but the Japanese automaker did make a solid car with a comfortable ride, plenty of interior and cargo space, and a 50-plus mpg rating from the EPA. But as so often happens, what’s old is new again, which means the 2016 Chevrolet Volt will enter a world where gas is cheap, SUVs are hotter than Beyonce with yellow fever, and the Prius is down 15 percent in sales (shopper traffic at Kelley Blue Book confirms a precipitous drop in Prius consideration).
