The modern CEO needs to find a way to manage the external R&D created by people that don’t work for them [i.e. the code that is available in open source projects]. These firms are ‘getting it’ i.e. they get that they have to ‘take’ the open source code, but also be a contributor and give back — it’s for their own benefit.
