El Niño describes an unusual warming of Pacific Ocean surface temperatures. It’s a well-established and recurring phenomenon that happens once or twice each decade. It disrupts weather patterns around the world, causing floods, draughts and ripple effects of varying intensity. Simply put, in addition to playing havoc with the economies of affected countries, it can kill companies. How real is it? Let’s put it this way: while comedians still poke fun at global warming and all-things-climate-change-related, El Niño isn’t even joked about anymore.
