With ‘Destiny,’ Console Players Are Discovering Something PC Gamers Have Known For Years

The Taken King is out, and the consensus is good. Destiny has been trading on enjoyable gameplay despite some glaring flaws for an entire year, and now Bungie is finally making good on its initial promise and giving us something that looks more and more like the first truly successful console MMO. It’s a bit of a funny thing, because it seemed like such a risky premise in the beginning, but there’s huge amounts of precedent for something like this working, just not on console. As with other industry trends — indies, early access, even First Person Shooters — you only have to look over to the world of PC gaming for an easy-to-read crystal ball on where console gaming will go in a few years. It’s a pretty simple idea, really: MMOs are fun. PC gamers have known this for a while, and a lot of the hype surrounding Destiny comes from console gamers discovering this fact for the first time.
