There was a time when stories of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Atari games cartridges buried in the New Mexico dessert were considered urban legends by some. According to the stories, Atari’s financial situation was dire at the time, but the company gambled on an E.T. game tie-in with the blockbuster movie anyway, hoping the game would be as lucrative as the movie. But the gamble didn’t pay off. Reviews of the E.T. game were horrible, cartridges were returned in droves, and Atari was left with a multitude of cartridges on hand that were essentially worthless. To nix the cartridges from its inventory, the stories say Atari buried numerous E.T. cartridges in a New Mexico dessert landfill.
