A new study by the Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems, together with NuScale Power and Energy Northwest, shows small modular nuclear reactors can easily and economically back-up, or load-follow, wind turbines just fine. The study used the 57 MW Horse Butte Wind Farm just south of Idaho Falls and the a single 50 MW NuScale power module. The study was highlighted at the NuEx Conference in Corvallis, Oregon last week.
