Cinema has always been full of adaption. From the earliest days of the industry, other mediums — plays, novels, short stories, real life events, news articles, and even comics — provided a great deal of content making its way to the big screen. Which mediums are ripe for inspiring adaptation, and which are taken seriously as art forms and serious storytelling, has changed over time, most evidenced in modern time by the box office dominance of the superhero genre. Critics and audiences have embraced comic movies as serious storytelling, so much so that The Dark Knight’s acclaim and reputation in 2008 led the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to change the rules for nominating Best Picture contenders, to increase the nomination odds for films like Christopher Nolan’s remarkable Batman saga.
