Cutting Into Thirds (Or How A Mathematician Spends An Hour Figuring Out How To Divide A Casserole)

My wife and I have one child and I am the cook.  This forces me to divide the meals I make into thirds, or if our teenaged son is really hungry, into a half and two quarters.  Being a mathematician who specializes in spatial mathematics, I usually find this to be a pretty simple task.  However, I have an elliptical casserole dish that defies obvious division, so I decided to sit down and figure it out.  Along the way, I re-discovered that quick estimates are often the way to go.  But first, let’s use a sledgehammer.
