People have been having a good time with Time’s bizarre VR cover, featuring a big image of Oculus Rift’s Palmer Luckey looking like an absolute idiot. It’s insulting, people say, it misses the point, it treats the tech industry like the fraternity from Revenge of the Nerds, etc. But it’s also fueled a backlash-backlash, with people across social media reminding us that Virtual Reality is somehow inescapably lame, and that the cool masses will reject it outright. This Eurogamer article is probably longest treatise I’ve read on it yet, claiming “Time has inadvertently nailed the big problem with Virtual Reality: it’ll never be cool.” It reads a little bit like the Time article’s absurd, constant usage of the word “nerd,” as if the presence of VR has somehow transported us all back to the mid-80s. That’s nonsense. VR already is cool, and it’s only going to get cooler. Time magazine is sort of lame, but that’s neither here nor there.
